Megan’s Story

HI, my name is Megan Johnson. I am the 40 year old mother of my fantastic twin boys, Luke and Max Johnson. This last year on June 30th 2016 I accidentally caused a Brain Injury to myself called Wernicke Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS). I luckily somehow in the only 20% that recover from this Brain Injury.

Not that I’m healed and back to the old mom that they knew, but we are all living together again back in their hometown of Huxley Iowa. In their short 16 years grief unfortunately has been a common theme. I found their dad Chris dead in my bed before I even knew I was pregnant. They were born early at 29 weeks weighing only 2lb 10oz and 1lb 10oz. They were as big as dollar bills!!! Somehow they grew and developed normally and know they put their head on top of mine since they are taller then me! My younger brother Adam stepped up and dramatically helped me with my twins! But then he was also taken from us.

He died from a overdose in my Dads car. It hurt me so much to lose him. Then my dad stayed the night with me and I found him dead on my couch. I unfortunately did not handle losing my men in my life and I numbed myself with pain pills. I then couldn’t afford pills and was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I got on the methadone assistance therapy to get off opiates. I did not stop drinking while I was on this treatment/therapy. I ended up scrambling my self all up. This Brain Injury I caused made me forget how to walk, I forgot who had died, I forgot my life! Luckily somehow my angels helped me heal. Not that I’m who I used to be, but On April 1st 2017 I was discharged from therapy. I caused our house to get sold, our vehicle to get sold. I’m living in an apartment back in my twins hometown. During my madness/injury they had to move in with my incredible, wonderful mother.

But she lives in a different state, do they had to leave everyone and everything they knew and move to Omaha Nebraska to live with their grandma. Somehow I’ve improved enough that we are all back together in our three bedroom apartment in Huxley Iowa. This little town of ours has been incredible! I was able to fill in for a secretary at a sprinkler company and I’m trying to get my old job back as a cashier up in the lunchroom at my twins high school. I know I am broken, but I am trying my best to heal and fix all my brokenness! If you could refer me to any organizations that help people like me in my situation that would be greatly appreciated.
